The Status of PKI in India
In India the Indian IT Act 2000 granted legal recognition to electronic records and
prescribed Digital Signatures as the method of authenticating such records. The Act
created the regulatory infrastructure in terms of the Office of the Controller of Certifying
Authorities and laid down the conditions for operation and monitoring of Certifying
Authorities.
Since 2000, several Certifying Authorities have been established both by Government
Organizations and by Private Organizations for the issuance of Digital Certificates.
Several applications requiring the use of Digital Certificates have been developed.
